super power no more…

6 Apr

As I progress into my 40′s there have been a slew of health related changes. The easiest to “fix” is my eyesight.

eyesight-300x1941

Last week was the boys’ spring break and I took the boys to their annual eye exam.  The hip smooth talking staff convinced me to get my eyes checked as well.  Why? It was only 2 years ago that my exam confirmed my perfect 20/20 vision.  In high school and college I was actually 20/15.  I LOVED being the one who could read signs before everyone else.  I used to freak people out with my “superior vision”. Friends would have me read menus and posters from far away and I admit, it is was kind of fun to ha
So I laughed when the optometrist told me I needed “progressive lenses” .  What an oxymoron: progressive and glasses in the same sentence, right!  I demanded to know my score. He explained it was still good, that a 20/25 was “really good for a women in her 40’s”.  He also explained most people don’t get that caught up on their score and many people never ask their score.ve a “super power”.

WHAT? Being proud of my perfect vision history & knowing I still “had the power” I just smiled and said “bless your heart, you’re new here right?  What happened to the Dr. from last year?” He politely explained they could hold my “script” for a year. My script for what?!

Maybelline Color Whisper Lipstick in Made-It Mauve ReviewTwo days later I read an add for a new Maybelline lipstick called Whiskers. “EWHH!” after looking at it a few more times I realized it said “Whisper.”

Yesterday I was taken aback by a text from a colleague that read “f*** from my vocation!” After many attempts at refocusing I realized it read “back from my vacation”

Then today I was at the gym & I grabbed a Cosmopolitan that had Miley Cyrus on the cover.   I took it with me to the treadmill and kept turning pages because I couldn’t read the words, they were blurry and strange looking.  Suddenly I realized I had grabbed a Spanish version of Cosmo.  No wonder I wasn’t sure what some of those phrases were on the front, I just thought it was some “new generation” lingo.

Kinda bummed to say goodbye to 20/20. I will miss my super power.

Oh well, on to bigger problems! Frames that will hide these crazy eye brows!

Papa Floyd's 90th Bday!

Papa Floyd’s 90th Bday!

A week ago today my family gathered in snow covered Amarillo to honor the life of my Papa Floyd.

His obituary (click here) talks of his love for family, horses and his dog “Tank”.  He was an amazing man and to know him was to love him. I loved being around my Papa, he was kind, outgoing and a friend to everyone he met.

When I was a toddler  he and my Grandma Bea said goodbye to their ranch in Colorado and moved to Amarillo to help my newly single mom.  It was a treat to hang out at their home that faced a huge cornfield near Canyon.

Grandmother Bea died when I was 11.  It was tragic for everyone. My Papa and I never talked talked about it.  He continued to pick me up and take care of me after school & on the weekends.  We would sit at the barstools in his kitchen eating the biscuits and gravy he had made for breakfast and not say a word.  I think for me it was too surreal and for him it was too painful to discuss.

At the time he was working as a truck driver.  The summer after Grandma died he took me with him as he delivered loads all over Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.  I LOVED the cab on his rig.  It was huge & I set up my stuffed animals & Laura Ingall’s books.  The cab had reading lights &  a 18-Wheelerradio/cassette player which I thought was the coolest thing in the world. It was fun to hear him talk to other truckers on the CB & he’d often let me do the talking.  Truck stops were this magical place where you could buy anything you needed for life on the road.  In my mind the cab was a covered wagon & we were pioneers exploring the old West.

Yet, my all time favorite story about Papa is about my “first” car.  At the time Papa was helping his friend Don Sheets run a small truck lot.   They mostly sold and traded 18 wheeler trucks/cabs/flatbeds.  Sometimes people would trade a car as a down payment for a truck.  So there was always an assortment of old cars.  When I was 13 Papa pulled up to our house & proudly announced he’d found me a car.

Yes…I was 13 and yes, I had already been driving.  Papa lived out in the middle of the country.  The dirt roads near his house were my training ground.  In rural Texas it wasn’t that unusual to start driving in middle school.

But it was unusual to actually have your own car.  Oh, did I mention it was a convertible? A 1975 Orange Fiat Spider convertible??  Sure, it had 175,000+ miles on it, sure the top was rusted and couldn’t come off, sure 5th gear was stripped & the seats were a nightmare and big deal that the passenger door didn’t open.

Did I care?  HECK NO!!  My mom went nuts and refused to let me actually have the car; thus began me and Papa’s  secret.  He told me “this can me our little secret”.  He’d let me take the car out and drive on the farm to market roads outside of town.  Occasionally we’d hit the highway and he would coach me on what to do while driving on ice, or how to change a tire.

The Orange Fiat eventually got sold. My “legal” driving years were spent driving a wild assortment of old beat up trade ins.  The “Big White”

“Big White”

International Scout that cost me $9 a week to drive,

the ugly blue Chevy pick up truck that had no heat or air…but the most memorable vehicle was “Bessie”.  Bessie was a BEAST!!! She was an ancient International Travel-All.  You could fit a dozen kids in that thing!!  Papa kept Bessie up until the very end.  It was such a joy to see her still sitting in the driveway next to the shiny new Hummer at my Papa’s ranch last time I visited.

I loved talking to my Papa about cylinders, transmissions, and carburetors.  He went with me to the Ford dealership in 1986 when I cashed in 5 years worth of babysitting $ to buy my new own car.  He was one heck of a “wheeler and dealer” and taught me the  art of acting like you found a better deal at another dealership and getting in your car and driving off; only to see the head of sales run after you waving his hands to tell you his supervisor wanted to offer us a great deal!

It’s so fitting that last week as I was talking to my mom about Papa’s funeral she told me; “It was beautiful honey, everything was simply perfect”. She shared with me all the details; from what suit he wore to how elegant and beautiful his casket was.  I broke into tears when she told me:  “ He sold his Hummer a few months ago and used the money to take care of all his funeral expenses”.  At 93 he knew his driving days were over- he sold his truck that he loved so much to ensure that his burial and celebration of life wouldn’t be a burden on anyone. It’s the perfect ending to Papa’s journey on this highway of life.

Age 10 was sweet for our Isaiah!

Age 10 was sweet for our Isaiah!

We had a nice relaxing weekend helping Isaiah “Zaya” celebrate his 11th bday!  His best buddy came, we had breakfast at IHOP, pizza, ice cream & a nerf gun battle with a few of his school friends. Today we let him blow his bday dough on a new bike and video games.

We love you kiddo!  Here’s to being 11!!

unfinished projects OVERLOAD! Don’t worry, not mine!
Borrowed from someone else.

We all have one.  You know, the list of “little projects” we want to work on.  It doesn’t have to be elaborate; it can be as simple as finally printing off those photos from the disposable camera you gave the kids for their Disney vacation 4 years ago.  Finding a frame for that adorable art work your son painted in Kindergarten, sending that friend a card & including that hilarious photo of the two of you in college, or printing off that poem that inspires you and placing it on the refrigerator.

So many people have said to me “ I am not creative” and I always disagree.  According to good old Webster’s’ creative simply means:

Relating to or involving the imagination or original ideas…

Being Creative can mean rearranging the junk drawer or even looking at your schedule and finding more efficient ways to get everyone out the door in a happy mood.

When it comes to tackling my “Creative Queue” winter is my favorite season.  It’s true I am a total wimp when it comes to the cold, I apparently am part lizard cause this Texas girl thrives in the heat and would be happy if it was a steady 75 degrees at all times.

When the cold East Coast months arrive I have a survival strategy:

  • Lot’s of layers
  • Electric blankets
  • Space heaters
  • TON’s of hot coffee and tea
  • & getting started on my never ending “Creative Queue”

It’s getting started that most of us struggle with, and I think it’s because deep down we all struggle with perfectionism at some level.

At a scrapbook retreat last year I complained that I wasn’t 100% pleased with one of my pages, but a wonderful wise woman said “Darlin- as they say ‘done is better than perfect’!”

This saying has helped me so much.  The perfectionist in me can keep me stuck & that box of old photos that I can’t decide what to do with just sits there year after year.

When I embrace the mentality of “Done is better than Perfect” I can actually feel the Creative Freedom it gives me! I suddenly realize that what matters is finishing the project, not worrying if it will be “the MOST AMAZING scrap book page ever done!” (Think of Ralphie in “A Christmas Story” and his daydream that his essay will earn him A++++++++++++ & everyone cheers.)

Yep, it’s true. Those kind of thoughts go through my head.  It’s these thoughts that also keep me frozen. It’s this desire to impress and amaze other’s that keeps me from moving forward.  It’s this flawed thinking that prevents me from simply releasing myself and doing what I enjoy the most which is “Creating”.

Image

That’s my lecture for today.  I really want to invite each of you to use your imagination this Winter.  Be creative. Get it Done!

The powerful man we honor today, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was “Creative”. He had a vision, he saw a new way things could be.  His legacy is amazing.  He wasn’t worried about being perfect, he was not caught up in the approval of others.   By following his instincts and encouraging others to see things creatively he changed this nation.

O.K., maybe checking something off your Creative Queue won’t change the world, but it might brighten someones day, it might inspire you and those around you, it might add warmth and serenity to your home.

I’d love to hear what’s on your Creative Queue.  What project or problem will you tackle this Season?

meffed up-2012 recap

15 Jan

Guess I have been avoiding my blog long enough! I blame my overbooked schedule, out of town relative and holiday festivities for getting me off track.

Time for some meffed up fun! 2012 was a wonderful year for the “meffam” & we are looking forward to the new adventures that await us in 2013.

001 collage (1)

The boys are getting so big! At 14, Eli (bubbameff) is the tallest in the family.  We always knew this was going to happen.  He was 21 inches at birth, long and skinny; not much has changed! He is totally a techno-teenager.  Loves his video games, you tube and is researching and saving money so he can build his own computer (uh- sorry kid, no help from mom and dad on that one!)

He is very responsible, quiet and sincere. He’s still got that great sense of humor & has fallen in love with all sitcoms filled with “snarkyness” and wit.  He has a great group of friends that any mamma would be pleased to empty her cupboards out for.  He continues to play baseball and basketball and enjoys shooting hoops with dad and little brother. He has adjusted wonderfully to high school and made us very happy by making the A/B Honor roll. Just like his daddy, he is very politically aware.  He follows issues of social justice with great interest & is active in his high schools’ Model UN club as well as our awesome church’s youth group.

Isaiah (babymeff) is on the cusp of being 11.  Can I still call him a baby? Sure I can!  A true “Renaissance man”.  He loves art, likes to knit, sculpt and play bass. (He was recently selected for the county wide honors orchestra). He is also an excellent athlete (soccer, basketball, football, baseball and most recently- Tae Kwan Do).

He continually  makes the A/B honor roll & he is still our sweet little boy.  He likes to cuddle, LOVES for me to read aloud to him anything Rick Riordan & is very content just hanging out at home working on a puzzle or helping me with craft project.  His bestest buddy Kelani (our 3rd son) moved to a new neighborhood and we don’t see him as much- so Isaiah misses his “twin” (we all do!)

Bill (daddymeff) is busy, busy, busy.  His work at GBCS keeps him on the road a whole lot.  He traveled 90+ days in 2012.  His passion for change is so empowering.  I am often amazed at his dedication and un-relentless devotion to the  hard “grassroots” work of humane immigration reform, ending mass incarceration and so many other issues of injustice.  He truly believes and lives out that one person can make a difference.  He looks at problems and asks “what can I do to take action on this issue and what can I do to help you take action?”  After 16 years it’s still that characteristic that I am most attracted to in him.

We celebrated our 16th anniversary this December & were so thankful Bill’s mom (Grandma Nan) was here at the time so we could actually unwind and enjoy some “us” time.

Me-2012 was a memorable year in many ways. In October I celebrated 5 years as an employee with Arlington County.  I have never worked anywhere that long.  I was recognized with an award for “Clinical Excellence” – it was nice to be recognized.  I still enjoy my job, it is demanding & yet I know my work makes a positive impact in our community.

My photography business is growing and keeps me too busy.  But I love meeting new people, hearing their stories and then capturing their personalities in photos.  It’s a challenge to find balance.  I love photography so much and the immediate reward of seeing a beautiful image that makes someone smile is a great payoff!  I have fallen in love with several families and have had the honor of photographing them over the last 3 years and nothing could make me happier! Only time will tell where this incredible hobby will take me in 2013!

As a family, we had some great adventures in 2012.  In July my dad (Grandpaw Miers) treated us to vacation in BEAUTIFUL California (the trip was a actually a B-day gift from Eli’s 13th b-day.)  Grandpaw Miers is such a great host for these adventures.  We vacationed in style and have so many wonderful memories from this trip. We got to see precious relatives and friends.  I joked how the people we love the most are all in California.  We seriously discussed moving there, but I am not a fan earthquakes &  we love the 4 seasons of the East Coast. So, I guess for now Cali will simply remain our favorite vacation state!

In August the 4 of us meff’s traveled to Ohio.  I totally (100%) relinquished control of this vacation to daddymeff.  He saved $ for a year, planned it all out and all I had to do was pack my bag. I have to say I was very impressed! We rocked and rolled in Cleveland for several days, saw the Indians defeat the Red Sox & saw the Browns practice & got tons of signatures.  The boys went to the Football Hall of Fame & I detoured and enjoyed the antique stores nearby.  After 6 years in hectic DC- it was refreshing to be in a big city that has a small town feel to it.  I fell in love with the Buckeye State!

During the hottest days of summer our whole region was hit with a catastrophic “Derecho”  which is very similar to a tornado & man it was UGLY! We had no power for 5 days.  Then in October we got to hunker down for  Hurricane Sandy which did very little damage in our neck of woods and we continue to pray for and support those who were impacted up North.

2013 our hope is to focus more on health and balance.   Balance is not something you see a lot of in the DC area.  It’s a very driven, fast place and we struggle to find a slower pace that allows for self care.

So here’s to balance and health! Here’s to a New Year.  We pray God’s blessings on all of you.  We are so thankful for the wonderful gift of family and friends.

Mefford Family Photo 4

family fun…fun family

29 Nov

I have avoided blogging lately due to the heavy work load.   Every year I swear “next year, no photo sessions after October 31st”. But who am I to say no when a family calls and “wants a few good photos for our Christmas cards”.  Then they show up with precious smiles, darling outfits and remarkable moods.  Next thing you know I have filled my memory card with family portraits, candid shots and an assortment of other photo goodies.  The post session editing takes up all my free time.  The minute I walk in from my full-time job I am on the computer.  My family is used to me dragging my laptop to basketball & Tae Kwan Do practices. I am not complaining, it’s the “life” I choose when I embarked on this adventure into photography.

But I had to take a quick break to add this post! I recently had the pleasure of photographing one fun family.

Mom was ultra prepared; she brought her kiddos tea table and tea set and we had ourselves a party!

It totally brought back memories from when I was a young girl. For years my BIG Christmas gift was a new piece of china from the fancy Nieman Marcus Children’s tea set I was collecting.  I hosted many tea parties for my girl friends.  One time we all wore our mom’s old prom dresses & my mom bought elegant tea cakes from the local bakery.

For this fun photo party “Little Man” was properly dressed in a suit vest and tie and he didn’t even complain! This fella is a true gentleman and he had the best manners!  And big sis (who by the way is the most gracious hostess) was properly dressed in her lovely white dress with smocking.  See why I love this stuff?  Who wouldn’t love this life?

It’s fun sessions like this that remind how precious childhood is, it pushes me to make sure and stop and celebrate the little moments with my boys.  No, my guys were never into tea parties; but they do love a cup of  ”Sleepytime” tea in the winter every night before we go to bed and it’s a relaxed time around the dining table.

So be sure and celebrate the little moments with the little people in your life.  They really do grow up fast and someday getting them to play “tea party” will be the last thing on their agenda.

Thanks Natalie for such a fun session!  Your children are just “melt your heart sweet” and your hubby is a hoot! Had a great time and enjoyed every minute!

hurry up and wait!

29 Oct

For those of you who don’t live on the east coast, you are missing out on all the “Hurricane Sandy” drama. It’s on the news, it’s a big deal.

I confess I am nervous. It’s the unknown that is driving me crazy. Right now outside my window it’s cold and rainy. I walked the doggie  real quick. It feels like a typical rainy fall day.

That is until I turn on the TV and see the radars that show the huge masses of storms headed this way, or until I get the emergency alerts reporting closings of schools, airports, government, work and public transportation.

“The calm before the storm?”

AHH! It’s making me crazy.  I was able to distract myself and stay busy Saturday with a 12 hour scrapbook event. It was great to focus on something else. Yesterday I busied myself with a portrait session, church, errands and storm preparation. And now, we wait.

Waiting is hard for this gal.

The first time I kissed Bill (oops- we weren’t even dating yet!) I knew I wanted to marry him. Waiting for him to propose was SOO difficult! I didn’t want to wait. I was ready!

Every time we move I start packing the house the minute we even think we are moving. My poor boys will ask, “uh, mom- where’s our ____?”(fill in the blank); my response “We need to get ready for the move and I packed them up.” When we move in a new house, it’s “crazy mom time” because I go insane until the house is “ready”. It’s no fun being around me during those times! Waiting in line….forget about it! Waiting in Northern VA traffic on 95!  Absolute TORTURE.

Now we get to wait on Sandy to do her thing. We have a great puzzle we can work on over the next few days.  It’s a panoramic view of Chicago’s skyline.  That will hopefully make the time pass.  Not so crazy about the idea of just hanging around while the wind & rain bash against our windows…but there’s really no other options.

So we wait. Ugh. We wait for the unknown. Will the basement flood? Will we loose power? Will there be total chaos?  Is this whole thing overrated and all the excitement is for nothing?

To distract us all from my craziness, here are some photos from a fun session. The youngest is an total sweet heart. I just want to scoop her up and make her mine. She’s charming, smart, lovable and sugary sweet. She and her siblings have the most beautiful eyes and are a lovely bunch to photograph! Typical for little ones, baby sister wasn’t going to smile on demand, oh no. It had to be on her own terms. We’d get all posed and she’d look off in the opposite direction or give me a frown. I have grown used to it with that age and have several tricks to get that toothy grin and I have learned to “wait for it”. I have to be ready to capture the golden opportunity when it strikes. I don’t get angry or loose patience, it’s out of my control!

I recently met up with this good looking gang again for a pumpkin patch session and baby sister took my hand at the end & asked if I was coming home with them.KILL ME! OMG! Melted my heart.Best part of my job is hanging out with precious ones at this age and getting to witness their adorableness. She smiled much easier during this session and was more than willing to look straight at the camera. Yet another reminder that everyone and everything has it’s own time and I can’t force it or rush it. Enjoy!

such a sucker for shutterfly!

12 Oct

I did it again, I got suckered in by their incredible coupons and free shipping deal.  I swore this was going to be the year that me and Isaiah made handcrafted cards.  He even helped me pick out a design and I bought the cute embellishments and stamp for it as well.

But then I opened my email today and saw such a good deal- I knew I’d be a sucker to turn it down!  Ordered the cards in less than 15 minutes. It would take me that long to make one handcrafted cards! So I just saved myself a ton of stress and freed up some time in my already filled up November and December!

I refer all my photo clients to shutterfly, they have such a fresh & creative selection of photo greeting cards.  My dream job would be to help design cards someday!  So it’s easy to see why I love shutterfly as much as I do.

I loved the whimsical feel to this card and totally love the way the colors “pop” against our black and white pics from California. I call it the Merry Mefford Card.

So if you haven’t checked shutterfly out please do!  And if you haven’t scheduled your family portrait to grace the cover of your LOVELY Holiday card, don’t forget to contact me! I still have sessions available!

meet ryan

3 Oct

I am posting this video for so many reasons.  Firstly- I am simply amazed by Ryan’s’ acceptance and attitude despite his terminal diagnosis.  As I have learned more about him I have been deeply touched.  He and his wife are part of an inner city grass roots movement with a community of young Christians.  They are committed to living simply and giving freely of themselves.  They have two small, precious children.  They love their families and their neighbors.

I really hate cancer.  I have lost friends and loved ones to this stupid disease.

Watching Ryan share his thoughts on his final days makes me hate cancer even more, yet you will only hear love and hope in this video. Trust me, you will cry!

But I pray we can all follow through and actually do one small thing to make this world a better place.

I am still thinking of what my action will be, but I assure you.  Ryan’s challenge will not be ignored by this family.  We will discuss it as a family and upload a video that we sent to Ryan. Can you do the same?

God Bless you Ryan and God Bless your family and your community.
